Ormskirk - Away - 05/10/2008

Su shows the way

One again RI took to the field with a numerical disadvantage, this time the game saw 13 of York play the 15 of Ormskirk. It was the first trip to Ormskirk and so they were an unknown quantity for the York side. The game saw the RI debut of Tiff and the second match ever for Vida and Steph, good performances from all 3.

The first half saw plenty of action with the Ormskirk team making good use of the inevitable overlaps to find space wide. Only a combination of York's heroic defending and Ormskirk's somewhat errant forward passing keeping the scores level. Ormskirk made good use of the number advantage by continually pushing the scrum back but RI did manage to steal a few scrums against the head.

The second half started as the first finished, Ormskirk's good forward work keeping York pinned down inside their own half and RI looking to hit back on the break. Some brilliant tackling denied Ormskirk on the York line, especially tackles from Vicki Robinson and a great chase back and tackle forcing a knock on by Julie Pease. The York fans were starting to believe they might be able to steal the game until a kind bounce on a kick fell nicely for a good finish from the Ormskirk left-winger. Su tried to lead a fightback with some strong runs down the blindside of the scrum but couldn't quite manage to find the line.

A 5-0 victory for the home team and really entertaining game. Hopefully RI will be able to take advantage of the 15-a-side option in the next game and start getting some league points!
